Fast Forward...
This is a work in progress. Right now, typical homes have 3, 4, or 5 TVs with multiple VCRs, DVD players, video games, or satellite receivers, and each has some wired connection to the outside world (satellite dish or cable). MS is trying to sell Media Center as a Tivo replacement in the short term, but ultimately sees a server running Media Center and these "extenders" as a way to replace the multiple devices attached to all those TVs. Through 802.11g and its successors, you'll have one cable coming in to your Media Center "server", distributing broadcast and cable/sat TV, DVDs, home videos, games, still pictures, and music to any TV in the home. Don't underestimate MS's ability to achieve this. They have the expertise in OSs, media compression, and games, plus the bankroll. Also, they would license to all companies unlike Sony which would try to keep a system proprietary. This whole project is strategic for MS to continue growth given the flattening of PC software revenues. Also, we may see an uptick in TV sales with HDTV finally becoming mainstream and LCD prices falling (I know retirees who have recently bought 15" LCD TVs for the kitchen). MS would love to get a few bucks for each "Media Center compatible" TV sold.
