I agree that the the public doesn't give a crap. They just want to run their software. However, the marketing campaign discussed in this article is not directed at the public - it is directed at the knowledgable IT professionals who have the keys to corporate purchasing.

If you grow up on windows, Linux will seem a great mystery. If you grow up on Unix/Linux, Windows will seem like a piece of crap excuse for an operating system that you have no choice but to use.

MS depends on you purchasing an upgrade every couple of years. Without that cash flow - that planned obselescence, MS will fall like a rock. New software and new upgrades bread new errors. MS doesn't have time to stabilize it's current code because they must focus on forcing you to upgrade so that they can pay their overhead.

Ten years ago, if you didn't replace your computer every one to two years, you could not run the latest cool games. Now, the hardware has surpassed the software, and you can use a computer for 3-5 years. The need for upgrades to support new hardware is decreasing. As this trend continues, MS will be approaching a desperate situation. The public will not need a new OS and they will not want a new OS for ever increasing periods of time. How does MS keep up its cash flow? Software activation was a temporary reprieve. However, the clock is ticking for the fall of the MS empire.
