The war is over
What war? The war is over and MSFT lost. It's just a matter of how long it takes for them to fall down. They're a monument to last week in technology. They'll grind on for a while, for exactly the reasons you mentioned. But that won't save their business model. OSS is more efficient for development and for business. Thousands of businesses all paying for the exact same software that does the exact same thing is economic insanity. It's like everyone in a city generating their own electricity and running their own sewer plant. OSS makes the utility concept applicable to software.

You can fight gravity a long time but in the end it wins. In economics the more effecient model will prevail. Maybe not right away but the outcome is no longer in doubt.
