ms cool? that would be the day
Microsoft "coolness"? It will never happen. Everywhere you go, everyone you talk to, cool is Linux/Unix, not Microsoft. Nowadays people are ashamed of using Windows.

Want to hear a group of techies break out in laughter? Mention building a robust, secure web server, then say you will use IIS. Those are funny jokes. Say that the best management tool is MMC. Read: big headache, layers upon layers of context menus so you can make one little change, then repeat again for next item, over and over. The fact that W2K MMC is not compatible with W2K3/XP, purposely so you must upgrade to W2K3/XP. Guess what, this kind of crap is not cool!

More uncoolness: must use Windows Update to patch a system/EVERY SYSTEM/ONE AT A TIME! Although you have the capability of downloading and installing each patch individually, it would takes hours for even just a few PCs (INSTALL/REBOOT/INSTALL/REBOOT)! Sure you can turn on "autoupdate", but the day-to-day, unpredictable behavior of systems that change on their own is NOT WORTH IT. EVERYONE KNOWS THIS. The idea is to have a private, CORPORATE WINDOWS UPDATE. Just like you can have a corporate build of IE using IEAK (not that we use IE anymore). This is desperately needed for windows update.

One of my favorites: planned obsolescence. This is unimaginable in the *nix
world. If something works, IT WORKS. Don't screw with it. Don't force people to "upgrade" it. Instead, support it with the next upgrade.

How about this one... Microsoft: "although our new version of __________ comes with such great new capabilities, in order to benefit you must be running the LATEST VERSION OF W________S!!!". Haha. No thanks slick billy.

And lets not forget the cost, three hundred dollars per workstation? No wonder students are abandoning the tech field. There's no money left over to pay the staff. And just like DLL hell, we have Licensing hell. And with all of its silly restrictions. If you can understand Microsoft's licensing, then you probably graduated from law school.

Also: having to buy the same product, over and over. Read: OEM preload, because MS does not offer FULL system licenses (an urban myth), ONLY UPGRADES! Now why is that? SO YOU CAN BUY IT AGAIN, AND AGAIN, AND AGAIN! And buying a Retail Box is NOT AN OPTION BECAUSE, guess what? GOTCHAAAAAAAAAA: WPA!!!

Some people think Bill Gates has the ability to overcome every competitor. In reality, he's more paranoid than smart. What would make Windows "cool"? I have the answer. But guess what, BILL & BALMER are not that smart. They will NEVER DO THIS. I GUARANTEE IT. Check it out:

1. Promote and support the CLI (more commands, better scripting, different shells).

2. Ability to start Windows WITHOUT the GUI (all features not having to do with GUI should be fully supported, think text mode RegEdit, ability to add/remove hardware, etc).

3. Admit they were full of it and REMOVE IE FROM WINDOWS (this is very important.. untie other middleware crap).

4. Ability to run just the bare kernel, then slice and dice as needed.

5. And last but not least: FULL API disclosure. No tricks, no sleight of hand.

But guess what, they will never do this. They won't do it because they are so paranoid of giving you a choice. A choice to do things your way.

Microsoft seems to think everyone wants integration. But that is a concern of the past. Integration becomes more and more irrelevant as we speak. People want to run apps that stand on their own, applications with personalities, apps with their own unique behaviour. Microsoft still lives in the 90's.

Bill & Balmer are growing older while the UNIX revolution is growing STRONGER!
