This 'managed code' thing (.NET) that MS is migrating all of their software to, including longhorn, is not CPU specific. MS managed code is just like Java with a JIT compiler and there are compilers already available for serveral CPUs from the Mono Project.

After setting up the lowest layer of interrupt handlers etc. they can fire up the .NET compiler and take off. Porting to other platforms will no longer be such a big deal.
