There is room for Solaris!
There is certainly room for Solaris, both in a stripped down, free version, and a souped up pay for version. It will definately be a competitor in the marketplace.

As for the file system issue, I would suspect that that would be more about compatibility than anything else. By the time WinFS appears, and probably before, Linux systems will be outfitted with similar capabilities that have been under development in the free software community for years.

At the same time, Sun is actually licensing some of their latest technology under GPL type licenses, the OpenLook 3D desktop being one example. Sun is working with the free software community and working with both customers and competitors as well. They are trying their best to adapt to the new environment. Bully for them.
