Having read the technical description of WinFS from Microsoft...
The systems consists of many layers of datbase technology, Web Sevices and other stuff on top of NTFS (yes, that is the bottom layer).

From Microsoft on WinFS:

From: http://msdn.microsoft.com/data/winfs/default.aspx?pull=/library/en-us/dnwinfs/html/winfs07142004.asp
on July 14, 2004

UPDATE: In spite of what may be stated in this content, "WinFS" is not a feature that will come with the Longhorn Operating System. However, "WinFS" will be available on the Windows platform at some future date, which is why this article continues to be provided for your information.

Re: The WinFS Data Model See: http://www.c-sharpcorner.com/Longhorn/WinFS/WinFSDataModel.asp

From eWeek (7 hours before I posted this) (see: http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1645223,00.asp)

Microsoft's decision to axe WinFS from Longhorn provides the company with an opportunity to expand the technology to work with multiple systems. which means that it is not important yet (as in, you are not going to be deploying it in any production environment, if you are smart!)

Have fun with the press releases and 4-color glossies, but it ain't ere yet!
