It'll be a question of who can last the standoff the longest
Let's think this out. Suppose Exchange incorporates the technology. Obviously Outlook will support it too. And anything else that has to connect to Exchange on the client side will have to support it too (like Evolution, which I'm sure they'll incorporate into their Exchange plugin if needed). That'll work for in-house e-mails just fine.

But now those Exchange users will have send and receive e-mails from the outside world. Now what? Exchange will deny any incoming e-mail coming from a non-Exchange server, because it's not sing the correct authentication. Likewise Exchange servers will refuse to send to non-Exchange servers becuase it won't accept the correct authentication, plus those non-Exchange servers may be using a new standard authentication method that Exchange won't know how to handle. So in other words, there will be a standoff. Who will adopt the other technology first?

Here's the thing though: Open source servers won't be able to adopt MS technology due to licencing restrictions. So obviously the OSS programmers won't budge. So now what you'll have is people who bought MS software who won't be able to communicate with the outside world unless MS adopts the other technology or they use another server, and the outside world not being able to communicate with people on MS software unless they ALSO buy MS software (or their licenced technology).

So who will budge first? Only time will tell for sure, but I know who I have my money on. Keep in mind though, that although MS does understand the power of customer demand, they don't know what the customer will be demanding just yet.
