Gaining market share
On what do you base this statement? MS has been losing market share of Internet servers for the last few years. Besides this is email. The only ISPs that use Microsoft Exchange are the ones that host Exchange email for companies that don't want their own MS servers.

I've googled this subject several times since 2002 and to the best of my knowledge, after several years of trying Microsoft finally converted Hotmail from UNIX to Windows. But they are using very little, if any, of their commercial MS-Exchange software on the system. (If anyone could point me to some recent data on this I would appreciate it.)

MS Exchange is an inside the firewall product for corporations. It doesn't scale well, costs too much, and is way too insecure to survive on the Internet backbone. It is destined to remain a tiny percent of the total number of email servers.
