Pobox's SPF email proposal
"Standards group scuttles Microsoft e-mail proposal"

The main check is all from Pobox, Microsoft's extra bits would add an extra check, but with the penalty of pulling the mail and checking the header. It wasn't really necessary for the core check. Plus it required XML parsing and other stuff and had some patent and license problems.

To publish an SPF record go here:
http://spf.pobox.com/

They have a wizard, you select the details of your email servers and it generates a simple text string.
e.g.
"v=spf1 a:mailserver.co.uk"

You login to your ISP's DNS system and set this text string (from the wizard) in your DNS.

If your ISP doesn't let you set arbitrary DNS TXT records like the above, then email them asking for SPF support.

After that, your DNS is telling everyone that for "yourdomain.com" only the email server "mailserver.co.uk" is allowed to send emails. So that spammers can't fake emails coming from your servers.
