It's Not Going To Work
they are creating a base standard for how their software will work. Where programers can expect to find certain things and such. each distro will stil be able to do different things within that standard and some will do it better than others.

That's like sticking your fingers in a dam full of holes. You sell software profitably by your ability to differentiate your offering from competitors?. There is no way around it. You cannot compete on price with near identical GPL type software. As soon as new vendors step into the market with essentially the same software you have (in which they had to make little investment), your share of the market pie becomes smaller, until you are not able to sustain your business. Coming up with this new standard may slow Linux fragmentation a bit, but it will resume out of the necessity for vendors to be able to substantially differentiate themselves from one another.

Hardware vendors can compete primarily on price, because they are able to play around with their manufacturing processes to sell items at lower cost profitably. Software vendors just do not have this ability. Almost all the cost of software goes to salaries. You just cannot play around with people?s salaries and expect them to stick around.
