There will be others who will try to differentiate
Their only goal really is to make sure the default configurations are compatible with each other, and that's only for those who are participating in this program. You'll notice the ones that are participating are the ones that supply vanilla binaries (SuSE, Red Hat, Mandrake), and the ones that are more high tech oriented (ones that usually need to be compiled from source to allow tweaking) like Debian and Gentoo are not on that list. So people who want standardization will go for the ones on the list, and those who want more differentiation will go for the ones not on the list.

Now that doesn't mean that the ones on the list will be identical. It just means they will be compatable. That doesn't mean there won't be a shakedown either. The ones with the better user interfaces (or eye candy) and offer the best services will probably be the ones who come out on top. Price will certainly be a factor, but a distro with a great user interface will probably be able to sell for more than double the amount of one that isn't nearly as good.
