Only time will tell ...
whether free software, thriving in a free and open marketplace, will follow the path of communism which could only exist in a police state environment.

As for Unix, Unix has always been a server OS, and as such, it was a natural target for Linux, itself a maturing server OS.

But now Linux is maturing as a desktop OS and Windows will be its next target. And Linux is not alone. Apple's Mac has been rejuvinated by its move to a free software Unix core and it is likely to give Windows ever increasing competition as well.

But then, of course, there are areas in which free software will take years to catch up to Windows. Why, I'm hearing that there is now even a Windows virus which talks! What will they think of next!
