Taking your comments in order.

i think Linux was already Making inroads into the server market w/o IBM.. IBM just helped it along. It was not the sole reason.

Yes, large corporations wanted to install software provided by companies that came and went. If there was a problem, support was no further away than a message board.
The point's not original to me, but IBM gave Linux and other open source software credibility it would not have had otherwise.

Should we be saddened that Linux is replacing Unix in many area? if so, why?

Yes we should, because people made a good living developing the software and then installing and maintaining it. Yes, Linux, a replacement product, also has to be installed and maintained. But with standardization, there may well be the need for fewer, younger, less well-paid people.
And don't forget that the contracts IBM wins with Linux reducing costs often lead to layoffs.
People often comment that progress displaces people. Yes, it does. But that displacement process need not be encouraged voluntarily. If Linux had been developed by a profit-making organization, the number of people employed would, I think, have been larger than in the current situation.

Also, i don't think MS is proving any such thing that Proprietary software is better than Open Source. Which is better really depends on what you want to do with the software. the programming method doesn't really lead to that much of a quality difference, but i DO feel open source has an advantage in the speed that bugs can be fixed.

We agree!
A user-friendly, bug-free open source program can be just as good as a Microsoft product for a limited subset of what the Microsoft product does. Just be sure by careful test that the additional functionality [available to users] and capabilities [available to programmers] in the Microsoft product are useless to you.

And speed of bug fixing can't include a post in a forum for these purposes. As a rule, enterprizes don't want to cure bugs by clicking on a link in Favorites. The comparison is RedHat or (the former) SuSE vs. Microsoft.
