you've correctly (to my assestemnt) compared communism to GPL... which is that it's a share community effort for everything. Too many people use Soviet totalitarianism as equal to communism and then associate it with GPL...
In a situation where everythign is voluntary and censtual, nothing's wrong with it.

As for who owns IP, as far as i know, it's still who ever created it. The creator of the original package still owns the copyright to the code he wrote. IF he releases it under the GPL, it's a contract saying, "anyone can use MY code as long as they follow these conditions."

On whether it's good for the originator or not... well that is his choice. If someone wantsto donate hsi research for the rest of the world to benifit from i say let them.

I guess the OSS people can correct me if i'm wrong or being overly general, since they know more about this than me.
