Matter of Opinion
"Barely good enough" is a matter of opinion. To me, Microsoft's products are in that category. I use many open source programs along with many proprietary ones. I don't really see much of a difference. I would even venture to say that Microsoft - and AutoCAD - are going so far as to ruin their programs by "dumbing" them down to the lowest common user denominator.

Heck, I would put GIMP up against PhotoShop anyday. Especially with all the plug-ins available for it. I would put Blender up against 3d Studios. I would even put Open Office against Office (especially if you don't need all the "interaction" junk of Office). These programs may be "good enough" but they are more than enough to get 90% of jobs done.

And what software is really moving tech ahead? What great innovation has come from any software company in the last 10 years? There has been no earth shattering innovation in quite a while. All the innovation is going into hardware - and software patenting happy

I would take your bet. I think most of them started on a TRS80, Apple IIe, C64 or TI-99/4A. As for the rest, yes many probably do make their living supporting Microsoft's products. I do. But that isn't to say that if Microsoft went away they would all be out of a job. Most "service" people would still be needed. And many programmers.
