Yah sure, give me one year and the entire software engineering population of India and I'll have your PC walking the dog, solving world hunger and reading bedtime stories to your children at night. Nobody does something for free and that is OSS's largest Achilles' heel. If companies can't guarantee their intellectual property they won't invest money into it. Sad truth. Why should they? As they are footing the bill what is stopping them from making it closed source, where is the negative incentive for doing that?

The open source projects that I have seen which have problems are not due to lack of funds or manpower, it has been more of a management issue. Often times people that maintain the branch don't take the time to monitor check-ins to see if something got broke or met coding standards. OSS often contains a little too much cowbow coding for my taste.
