True.
The mechanism is open-source kills off much of the proprietary competition, specifically varieties of Unix.
That leaves Linux carrying the Unix side of computing.

Then Microsoft makes a deal with IBM that says something like the Microsoft software you install is free. But customers will have to pay for Microsoft's other products.
Microsoft by then will have a full range of products, allowing them to replace Unix completely.

IBM will accept the deal because they get the advantages of open source without having to wrangle volunteers, either themselves or through an agent like RedHat or SuSE (Novell).
IBM has no interest in open source except the advantage to their bottom line. If they turn it back into a hobbyist's self-indulgence, then okay, it served its purpose.

Bill Gates will offer to buy lunch for Linus Torvalds to thank him for handing over much of computing. But if Linux stalwarts have in fact made a vow of poverty, chastity, and obedience (to IBM) he probably won't be able to accept.
Too bad, would be a good lunch.
