I Don't Think The Alternative Will Pan Out
It could go the other way. OSS may be such a drain on the market value that proprietary companies simply toss in the towel and no one ever moves the technology ahead.

I believe that is the situation in the Unix market. People didn?t seem to care that much about value in the Unix market (just capability), and that is why Unix became so susceptible to Linux - after customers started caring about value. Also people in the Unix market weren?t all that vigilant about the damage Linux could have done to them. Sun even referred to Linux as its brother separated at birth. (Well Linux has destroyed its own Unix brothers far worse than Unix vendors had calculated.)

I believe however MS and vendors in the PC market are more resilient to competition ? because there is so much more of that going on in the PC market. PC vendors staved off network computers and Internet appliances, and made the fat client PC more relevant than ever ? even in this Internet era. Actually I believe at the end of the day, Linux will have done more than MS could have ever done, to make MS software dominate the enterprise in a fairly short period of time.
