But, what happens to value?
It seems to me open source is creating "barely good enough" products that in fact does destroy value of code. As I said, remove the value (incentive) and the vast majority won't bother.

Sure it's easy to make a halfway copy of something when the path has been cleared for you. In fact it's even sort of fun. (If your into programming for fun.) But that is a very long ways from investing millions of man hours to move the tech ahead.

I'll make you a bet. I will say 95% of all open source folks started with (learned) computing on an MS platform. I will go further and say most of them depend upon the Windows platform (in one way or another) to make their living. Remove the living and suddenly the "hobby" isn't nearly as much fun or important. After all, when you are flipping burgers 12 hours a day to make a living "hobbies" tend to be forgotten.
