It could go the other way. OSS may be such a drain on the market value that proprietary companies simply toss in the towel and no one ever moves the technology ahead. (Open source is NOT innovative and at best poorly copies proprietary works. UNIX-Linux, OpenOffice-MS Office, Gimp-Photoshop, etc., etc.)

Remove the incentive and no one other than a few hand full of wanna be programmers will even bother with it. You won't see PHD's lining up to spend months on a problem for free.

Not counting children in school (living on mom and dads dollar) EVERY person I know that is involved with open source is also EMPLOYEED by a proprietary company of one form or another to support themselves and their "hobby". I would venture to say that if you remove the financial support, "hobbies" are the first thing to go...
