Open Source Myth
MIT tried to create a royalty-free system with the original EPC standard. They did so by ignoring scores of existing patents (some held by individuals, not corporations) or trying to get them all put into the public domain.

Apart from a few software solutions, what else is "open source" -- your computer, cell phone, television, the Internet? Hardly.

Why should Intermec, that has spent millions on acquiring or developing the technology, make it easy for other companies with no previous investment to become competitors?
