Royalties fund R&D
In some cases, there are abuses in patent litigation (cf, Lemelson's "bar code" patents) but, for the most part do reward individual inventors and provide R&D money for companies.

When it comes to a complex technology like RFID, there are many individual patent holders with rights to fundamental break-through principles.

Litigation is usually the last resort for many patent-holders becaue it costs them lots of money to go to court.
