No big deal
Microsoft has been offering its SQL Server database product in MSDE form for a number of years now. SQL Server Express is just a rename for the latest version. Use of MSDE has always been "free" and many commercial applications embed it in their packages to provide full function database capabilities for dedicated applications that do not require the use of a full-scale DBM.

Veritas' Backup Exec is one such program and has been using MSDE for several years to manage configuration and history data for large backup system networks. MSDE works just like SQL Server for other functions, such as Crystal Reports, as well and management consoles that work with MS SQL Server work identically with MSDE.

MSDE has the complex updatable views and stored procedures sadly lacking in most of the freeware databases such as MySQL.
