"Microsoft has been trying to create these kinds of changes to Windows for more than half a decade, when developers and researchers at the company first outlined the ideas of a "Trusted Windows." The initiative took on the code name Palladium in 2002, and, Heil said, raised the ire of those who saw it as the equivalent of digital rights management on a chip."


Microsoft can put all sorts of spin, window dressing, and PR-foo on the so-called "trusted computing base", but most people recognize the situation as the wolf guarding the hen house: The primary reason for the existence of this technology is to _restrict the user_ with digital rights management. All of the other so-called benefits, like compartimentalized memory and encrypted storage, are of marginal benefit to most, if not all, users.

I can manage my own rights, thank you. I don't need Microsoft, the MPAA, the BSA, RIAA, or anyone else to manage them for me.

Microsoft can waffle or assign new names or put whatever label they want, but the sheer fact is that most people specifically _distrust_ Microsoft with this. Why else do you think this is a news item? Its when the normal "we love whatever you put in" attitude with Microsoft is replaced with "We're making some modifications based on feedback from the industry", that's when.

DRM is extremely unpopular, and for good reason. It isn't just the so-called "pirates" that hate it too-- actually, the pirates would probably have least to fear because they will crack the technology. As usual with DRM, the one who pays is the law-abiding average user. Anyone who thinks "it will be different this time" hasn't looked at the history of copy protection. Just because its in the hardware or the CPU doesn't mean it won't be cracked.

Any time Microsoft says something about "trusted computing", the first question that should come to peoples' minds is: "Who is this security really for? For me, the user, or for Microsoft and software/record/movie/e-book/IP industry?"
