Why support Altnet?
"In the summer of 2003, it announced that it had purchased patent rights to the process of identifying files on a peer-to-peer network using a "hash," or digital fingerprint based on the contents of the file."

So Altnet didn't even invent the process; it just bought the rights to it, probably because it saw a way to make money from the patent. Why is it a good idea to support Altnet in this? Unless I'm missing something, this is a software patent, something people here have been railing against for some time now. Isn't this another case of abuse of the patent system, regardless of who the target is? Won't this further validate software patents in general?

In your eagerness to punish the RIAA, don't lose sight of the bigger picture. There are other ways to get back at the RIAA.
