Lose IE, lose the firewall, or change your prefs
I've installed sp2 on a compaq notebook with xp home, and have had no problems except with my office network, and a div-x codec that had to be updated. I eventually disabled the firewall, which solved the network issue. If all else fails, try that.

I use mozilla for almost everything, but I still occasionally have to use IE for some stupid site that is coded so that only IE will work, and I haven't had trouble accessing sites with either, even with pop-up blocking enabled in IE. I'd check your security settings in the internet options - it sounds like you've made them way too restricted, if you have to add each address manually.

I found that a number of annoyances with xp home disappeared after I installed sp2, like losing my mouse or keyboard driver after the notebook went into and out of standby or hibernation mode. The security additions weren't crucial for me, but those bug fixes were. I'd try to fix the problems, rather than uninstalling sp2.
