A federal judge in California who recently ruled that even though Adobe said it was just licensing software to its customers, it was actually selling each customer a copy of the software. The "license agreement" that popped up when a user installed an Adobe program couldn't take away the rights the buyer acquired under copyright law when he bought a copy of the
Adobe program. The decision is significant because software vendors have long been trying to limit, by contract, the rights buyers of their software would otherwise have under copyright law.
