Okay, you didn't believe Linux gained on Windows.
My point in the prior post was that we have an article titled Microsoft: Linux may mean price cuts, fewer sales. It's based on an SEC filing. Approximately the same text has been in SEC filings for a long time. Microsoft continues to roll along, without much damage from Linux to date.

So the article uses "boilerplate" language to hint Linux is doing damage. Look at some of the other posts here, in which Linux supporters believe that there's cause for celebration. When I wrote in my last paragraph:

The hardy band of Linux fanciers is expected to leap joyously on any hint of the possibility of the barest nudge to Microsoft's dominance. Don't let their cynicism succeed! Believe in fact so that you can't be disappointed.

I was saying, don't let the author of the article manipulate you. Look at the facts, see what's happening clearly, and know you'll have to put the party hats away until another day. If that day ever comes.

And it's worth emphasizing: I don't opposae competition to Microsoft. I'd like to see it. But it should come from companies that pay people for the good work they do. My opposition is summed up in the statement:

The workman is worthy of his hire.

(It's an old motto, so women should be and are included.)

I also want Linux and other open source projects to be guided by the self-interest of the people and organizations working on it, not exploited by companies like IBM, which leverage idealism and the need to build a resume in order to avoid having to hire their own staff and to win bids for service contracts that displace workers.

So, if Linux and all open source projects closed down and gave their IP to a new, profit-making organization that acted for its own benefit in the market, then I'd be happy. I'd expect to try their products.

But that's not the situation now, is it?!
