nuturing ActiveX is necessary for MS
After about six months of web browsing, your average joe user's home comptuer can be crippled and unusable due to applications such as spyware, adware, hijaakers, etc. When API's for IE were developed, MS did not have the foresight to know how bad this problem would become. I clean home users' computers on the side and many of them are unusable simple because of applications installed through web browsing. I recently repaired a machine that took over 45 seconds just to open the start menu - I found over 50 malware products running on the system. We probably all know of friends or relatives who can't keep a windows system running for very long for this one reason.

Even at work, I spend a large fraction of time finding and removing hijaakers and search "assistants" that are gobbling up computer resources. Solving this problem, is in my opinion one of the most important issues facing MS to avoid losing market share to Linux, Applie, and/or Mozilla. I've installed Firebird for my users at work.

I'm interested to see if MS has found a realistic soluction that strikes a balance between allowing legitimate plugins and preventing malicious programs. At the very least, a method to limit users from being tricked into installing maliscious software would extend the lifetime of a home system on the internet. Now it's up to the third party developers to market their plugins as safe, efficient, and effective instead of just taking advantage of uniformed consumers.
