I just did it
I was installing WinXP on my new Athlon64 machine, when the installer "lost" the CD. This happened just before the network setup part of the installer. I just kept clicking the "Ignore" buttons, until the installer finished. To my amazement, WinXP booted to the desktop. I checked, and IE WAS NOT INSTALLED! Gee, I though M$ said it was impossible . . .
