Let see, no licensees for its game box design, so it hires a contract manufacturer and tries the market itself.

No phone maker wants it phone design, so it hires a contract manufacturer and sends MS own salesmen out to sell it.

Basically, OEM route flops, so Microsoft tries direct route, and flops.

So they're just reacting to the failure of their OEM music stores. If any of those OEMs was up in the iTunes sales range they wouldn't be doing this.

MS can't play with others, so it 'Plays with itself'.
