As I also said somewhere else - I think this is going to come down to the lawyers figuring it all out (come the revolution... first against the wall, etc.!)

IMHO, I think that there is a difference between saving to/from the XML format and using it to build a solution. Even without the schema OO could have figured out most of the XML tags anyway (which puts the lie to the whole 'obfuscating' FUD). It's sort of human-readable (when you consider that Word has hundreds of thousands of variables/tags and has to encode OLE objects that are embedded inside it).

So - I still think that OO and SO will be able to play with this sfuff.

In the end, I think we are all missing the point anyway. WordML isn't any more useful for sharing documents with OO than RTF is. The main benefit of WordML and SpreadsheetML is for ISVs who want to develop cool server-side web service stuff. The whole document interop is a red herring.
