Quoth from Microsoft...
You should have read the page that was indicated. Interestingly, there's a quote "You are not licensed to distribute a Licensed Implementation under license terms and conditions that prohibit the terms and conditions of this license. You are not licensed to sublicense or transfer your rights." This conflicts with the GPL section 7, which explicitely states that such rights must be transferable. Also the BSD license implies the same. So, according to the quote, it has nothing to do with modifying the schema. Microsft will not permit you to distribute products based on the schema unless you choose a license that does not forbid anything Microsoft wishes to claim. In one fell swoop; they've eliminated compatibility with their cheif competitor in the XML document arena.

I have no objection to software being sold as a business and you might note that StarOffice is sold, even though 80% of it is free software. To say that free software is zero-cost is disingenuous. Where did you read that it is?

And yes, I agree. Microsft is competing against the legacy of their installed base. So is OOo and StarOFfice and a plethora of open and free packages of lesser reknown.

*chuckles* And no you stinkin' red. Go out and buy your own Tranny. This one's mine. (The preceeding is humour. See also: joke. Read and re-read definitions until you grok.)
