OO a competitive threat?
Actually I think Office 97 is the competitive threat. But that's by the by

As per my other post here - I don't see that the GPL is incompatible with this license. You don't need to share the Schema or the documentation to make use of the XML. You can happily just transform in and out of it - as long as you don't modify the schema.

How do you think GPL software works with the many other thousands of XML schemas that are provided under similar licenses? This is no different from them. It would be dumb to allow the schema for Word documents to be changed by anyone other than Microsoft - it means it is no longer what it purports to be - the schema for Microsoft Word docs.

While Open Source may be very admirable - there are still many many companies who prefer to make software as a business and they will always own their IP - its fantasy to try and believe that we are going to all live in some Communist utopia where noone owns any property (but if that happens, then I want your car, comrade happy )
