The key, for me, will be re-acquiring my existing library
The key, for me, will be re-acquiring my existing library. The genius breakthrough of the iPod (IMNSHO) was that it allowed me to scan-in my entire existing CD collection, and now I have (essentially) my entire music collection with me at all times in my shirt pocket.

For an eBook device to appeal to me, it will have to be able to replace my existing physical library with an equivalent universal eBook. I doubt anyone will re-license my existing library to me at a reasonable price (and much of it probably wouldn't be obtainable anyway), so I suppose it will require a Kurzweil-like "reading machine" to allow folks like me to scan-in the existing books.

At that point, it's a certainty that eBooks will take off, just like music did when iTunes allowed you to "re-purpose" your existing CDs for your iPod.
