First, there is no proof that these reports were written by Kerry; the "proof" offered by the Swift Boat Veterans has turned out to be false. More to the point the documented record of events for which John Kerry was awarded Silver and Bronze stars is supported by EVERY member of his crew who was present (the only SBV member who actually served under Kerry was not present at either action). The only other surviving boat captain from the action for which Kerry was awarded the Silver Star supports Kerry's version of events. The man Kerry rescued from the water while injured and under fire, an action for which he was awarded the Bronze Star, supports Kerry's version of events. Their stories have not changed in 35 years.

Given all of this, what is suspicious are the flip flops of Kerry's former CO, who wrote glowing reviews of Kerry in Viet Nam and recommended him for his Silver Star, and continued to back the official record as recently as 1996. Now, of course, he says that Kerry may not have deserved that award; or, rather, he signed a statement that said as much, then retracted it, then retracted his retraction.
