The term 'self-inflicted wound' has a very negative connotation. No one is suggesting that Kerry hurt himself intentionally in order get himself home. Also, just because someone hurt himself does not automatically disqualify him for a Purle Heart. If you accidentally hurt yourself while enaging the enemy, most commanders will still recommend the reward.

That said, Kerry's account of the event to a reporter was that he lobbed a grenade into a rice patty with no enemy in sight, and this doesn't sound like it qualifies for a Purple Heart.

I wish this whole issue about medals would just go away. The issue should be what Kerry had done in the 35 years since he came home from Vietnam. Things like meeting with the enemies of the United States, admitting that he committed war atrocities, and his 19-year record in the Senate where he voted against nearly every bill that would have strengthened the military or the intelligence services.

There is no Statute of Limitations on war crimes...
