Smart card
I am no expert but some things come to mind...

These are often called smart cards, which are able to run programs when they are used. They can for example, store information securely on the card, and transfer it securely. The card can also hold much more information than any regular 'credit card'.

A card like this is convenient when using small devices, such as cell phones. For example, a similar SIM card is used in GSM mobile phones. The card holds your caller identity, stored phone numbers, and maybe something else. Changing the card inside the phone changes the identity of the owner, phone numbers, and the owner of the card is billed. You can take your friends phone, put your card in, and you can receive and make calls as if it were your phone.

I think South Koreans have ID card that is a Java card, and it holds some of their medical records and other information about the person. They use the card to identify people and prevent fraud in the health care system.

You could use the Java card as an electronic wallet, where you can download money like cash. No more bills, coins, etc. It could also be a secure wallet, opened only with your own password so it is mostly useless for a thief (although you still lose your money if you don't get your card back).
