- Good question...

On one hand, it's very possible that they may have put a mike in front of a speaker, and used a voice recognition software to transcribe the recording. It's much cheaper to pay one guy to switch tapes or files than hire people who actually know the source material. I don't use any apps like that, but I imagine that certain voice apps can do it directly from the file as well. It's likely that the software went for a more plain phrase than the "doctor-speak."
On the other hand, English is notorious for the number of different dialects that are in use. Likewise, it's often difficult for non-native speakers to accent the right syllables. Just look at the American sports commentators who repeatedly botch Svetlana Khorkina's last name, EVEN when the Greek ones get it right. I can imagine why Indians with relatively little English training might struggle to understand certain words. It's extremely hard to become fluent in a foreign language unless you are surrounded by those who speak it natively for several hours a day, and not the people who don't know it any better than you do. - Posted by: johnsmith222 Posted on: 08/28/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
