Sounds like they're using the VxWorks DOSfs
Wind River's VxWorks supports several different file systems including a DOS file system compatible with Microsoft DOS. It sounds like the Spirit designers chose to use that files system with their flash memory.

It also sounds like the article author or their source(s) was just using "Blue Screen of Death" as a generic term that we'd all intuitively understand; as another poster points out, the system has no screen and VxWorks has no "Blue Screen of Death".
