Please...this is truely an amazing achievement
The reason the system operates with such a small memory
footprint is the difficulties operating in such a harsh
environment with minimal power consumption.

Without the protection of an earth like atmosphere the
rovers encounter enormous variations in temperature and
extreme radiation - making the circuitry design very
complicated. Faster processors or more memory would
require additional power, expensive to obtain for missions
that far from the earth and the sun.

The job performed by the Mars mission team is
outstanding, the mission has already exceeded
expectations and has the possibility of continuing into the
next Martian summer.

The software created by the project has received
recognition from NASA winning the "best of the best" award
for software developed by the agency this year

MS-DOS was not used in the mission!

Did they have to license the now patented MS legacy file-
system for the project?
