Some explaining to do
The deleted data in the document is still data and not metadata. If we have data that describes this data as being logically deleted then this is metadata.

My second point definately does make sense, let me clarify.

In, for example, Oracle Applications I have complete access to all the data via SQL without having to run the application. This is because the data is held in an RDBMS and described by metadata in the system tables. One is thus able to know the format of the data and the relationships between the data without needing an application at all.

As every MS application uses its own proprietary way of formatting data the only way we can get at the data is via the application or whatever APIs MS deign to give us. This is one of the reasons why in all serious business applications the relational model has swept away all alternatives.

As far as Microsoft Office is concerned from a data management perspective the thing is still in the stone age.
