No to be picky but
..Metadata is data that describes data...

If the data represents an office document then attributes of the document would include all of the example tracing data given in the article.
Me thinks this data fits the metadata definition just fine.

..I only wish the metadata for MS applications was available, then you would be able to get at the data without having to use the application at all....

This doesn't make sense.
