Give me an example
"Lack of applications"

If you really believe this, you must be blind. Check out almost any Linux distro, you'll find plenty.

"poor (badly copied) applications"

The major apps are all very well made, and the minor apps aren't any worse than all their Shareware equivalents for Windows.

In fact, I'd say that overall open source programs are no worse than their Windows counterparts - and in many cases, the open source app is much better. I've been using open source stuff for a while, and I've been very satisfied.

"and the issue of patents looming on the horizon"

Yes, patents continue to be a problem. That's one thing that's going to be a bit of a problem for a while.

Despite that, it is getting better now. The GIF patent is expiring, and SCO is on its way to losing.

I've been dual-booting Linux and Windows XP for a while now, and I've found that switching is pretty easy, especially since I'm using more open source programs now, and have been *very* satisfied.
