Well done, Minas.

People need to be reminded that there are already existing technologies that would work very well if they were used. Proxy Potting is an excellent solution, like email address baiting and security Honey Pot servers, it uses minimal resources to establish the culprits by "giving him enough rope to hang himself with". It can be automated, and the evidence can be stored for use by law enforcement officials. We can have a very high confidence that the IP addresses can be blocked, so we can easily run an IP blacklist and share it with our peers.

If Microsoft and the IETF truly want to help defeat spam, they could set up thier own proxy pots and public ip blacklists. They could run classes for email administrators in the correct server setup, including IP based grey-listing. They could help the largest smtp server producers alter their software to make it easier to install filters at all layers of the stack.

We sure as hell don't need a privately owned protocol in the middle of our publicly owned email system.
