You buy a copy
You bought a copy of the song with a license to use it in some specific ways. Read the fine print. You cannot usually play it over the airwaves or charge admission to listen to it and such. Otherwise, you are free to do what you want with it. The physical disk media has a separate guarantee that would cover replacement if defective.

The law allows you to make a lot of copies of the material yourself. Up to $1000 worth of copies for all the material you have access to in any 180 period. That is a lot of CD burning, BTW, if you figure that the 49 cents (at RNWK) to 99 cents (at AAPL) is a retail value per song.

It is pretty obvious that people want the convenience of looking over the lists of music available and downloading what they want at a low cost. It is not so certain that the costs can remain at zero and still somehow sustain new content, although people seem to think that linux will go on forever with free access to new features, so maybe media artists will continue to publish new music for the satisfaction of knowing that others care.

The free services are not going to be as universal or as reliable as a pay-for distributor might be so there is room for some degree of payment

P2P networks are not going to ever be as responsive as centralized, pay per access sites since the location of a tune has to migrate slowly from one node to the next.
