File swapping increase CD sales: CD sales had huge increase in 1999 and 2000 when Napster was going strong. As soon as Napster was shutdown CD sale decreased briefly until Kazza and others got popular. Then CD sales started going up again.

I know personally I bought more CD in 2000 than ever. I downloaded all kinds of new music by searching on the genre criteria and by using the genre chat rooms on Napster. I'd find all kinds of new music and buy it.

Now I don't download anymore because of the stink over the whole issue but I also buy maybe 1 CD a year if I'm lucky to find a CD worth buying. So all those in the intertainment industry have lost my $1500 a year (about 3 DVDs or 1 Game per 2 weeks) and it's going to the movie studio's instead. I'm not boycotting, just haven't heard anything worth buying from listening to the radio.

So why would the music industry disappear? It wouldn't. It will change but not disappear. CD sales isn't the only thing making money. Live concerts make huge amounts of cash. I'd argue the all the CD is is a advertisement for concerts. Next thing CD are collectables. Treat them as such. It's like having rookie card for your favorite hockey player. A photo copy of said card is just not good enough. No matter how perfect that copy is and you can make them pretty perfect with a scanner and good printer, that copy is just that a copy. It's not part of a collection. Collectors are who buy music or movies for that matter. Many are just satisfied with the radio and a concert or with seeing it on TV or at the theatre. The collector will buy the CD or DVD.
