Cry wolf again
"Everyone thinks that somehow, magically, music is just going to keep happening. I think in a very real sense we are looking at the end of music as we know it. Not in a good way. Instead, musicians will find it even harder to make a living. Record labels, recording studios, Music Television.... all of that is going to disappear, probably within my lifetime. And all because the court basically threw in the towel and said that its legal to make the software to do illegal activities, because it "may be used for legal purpose"."

Let's take a look at a worst case scenerio. All current media companies go belly up. No CD's, no radio, to CBS, NBC, ABC. No movies for the theaters or HBO etc.

Now what happens?

Well first of all, all the new stuff on the P2P networks is gone. We can download copies of On Golden Pond (Movie) or Two Steps Forward and Three Steps Back (Music), but nothing new. Piracy threat ended.

Now two things exist. Creative people with a need to create and people who are craving entertainment. It will not take very long for these two groups to get together and fulfill each other's needs.

I am not sure what the vehicle would be. Mabe a 32 bit MP3 for free and a decant quality one for pay. The point is these people will still get together without the MPAA and RIAA.

Of course it will never get to that. As the big five record companies lose more ground to the Indies and Alternate Distribution Methods, they will adapt or die, but then someone else will step into the gap and be the next member of the big five (7,9,53, whatever).

Keep in mind that the music industry as a whole is having a recod year. When you hear that the big five are down in sales by 7% and it's all the fault of pirates, look closer and find out that the Indies are having record breaking sales because people like me are sick and tired of Madona clone #7 or Insync clone #14. Total units sold is on pace to break records this year.
