I am a non-smoker.
(1) I did not state - anywhere - anything - along the lines of protecting the profits of the few at the expense of the many is a good thing. However, let's look at that specifically in this case for a second. Whose profits are being protected (i.e. "the few") - the end users? the music industry? or the file-share software providers? You be the judge, as obviously, you are smart enough to figure this one out. This brings us to the second part of the question: At whose costs (i.e. "the many") - again I ask - End users/Music industry/Software Developers? I think even you can figure this one out.

(2) How can you in all honesty tell me that this P2P thing is as popular as it is? Because folks want to upgrade their systems? Because they want to share their baby photos? Well, do this then - do a search for "Britney Spears" (ANY FORMAT) and tell me how many "baby pictures" show up in your search. Tell me how many of these hits are for LEGAL property by legal owners.

RIGHT NOW (not in some abstract distant future, not in someone's lab, not even in someone's future software development that I ever heard of), these are NOT "cheap legal downloads". They are FREE, and ILLEGAL. That's why there's 3,000,000 Kazaa users. And 5,000,000 Bearshare users. There's no debating this. Have you even heard of ANY software company making P2P versions of LEGAL music downloads? Is anything in the works? Come on, this has been around since my college days (1999). In all that time, noone has made this stuff legally.

And yes, that does include NAPSTER. They are a simply download site now, nothing to do with the original P2P network. Gee. How come?

So what's in your soup, spooner?
